About

The Coalition for Fire Safety in Buildings is honored to invite you to the conference “Fire Safety in Buildings: Protecting Lives and the Future of Urban Development,” organized in partnership with the newspaper “Adevărul.”

The conference will take place at the JW Marriott Hotel in Bucharest on May 7, starting at 10:00 AM.

Every day, there are 5,000 fires in the European Union, 90% of which occur in buildings. According to Fire Safe Europe, 11 people lose their lives in these unfortunate events, and another 190 are injured. Approximately 126 billion euros are lost annually in Europe due to fires, and the environmental impact is severe.

In Romania, according to data from the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, over 40,000 residential fires occurred between January 2012 and October 2018, resulting in around 3,400 deaths or injuries.

The overall trend is alarming. On one hand, due to the increasing use of flammable materials in our homes, fire can spread in a single room in just 3 minutes compared to 25 minutes in 1950. On the other hand, the rise in building thermal rehabilitation may increase the fire risk due to the materials used and improper installation.

What needs to be done? What legislative changes can we expect from the European Union and Romanian authorities? How can the needs of modern buildings be reconciled with the increased fire protection requirements for those inside them?

Main topics to be discussed:

  • 2019, an important year for fire safety in Romania
  • Energy efficiency and fire safety
  • Global trends, European legislation, and Romanian realities
  • How can we reduce the number of victims and material losses?

  • Raed Arafat, State Secretary – Ministry of Internal Affairs
  • Ciprian Roșca, State Secretary – Ministry of Regional Development and Administration
  • Iulian Iancu, Deputy – President of the Industry Committee
