The RoGBC supported a seminar by Ms. Aurore Julien; an expert in designing green buildings. The very low cost event included a networking lunch and three and a half hours of instruction on topics including passive solar orientation, natural ventilation and daylighting, and tips for successful sustainable construction projects. This seminar was an abbreviated version of the "Green Design Principles" course that is part of the Romania Green Building Professional program. The seminar began at 11am and ends at 4:30pm on May 21 at Cinema Victorei in Cluj-Napoca.
We were pleased to announce the organization of a Transylvania chapter of our Green Building Council to better serve this region. The chapter benefited from the infrastructure of the national organization but will provide more local training, events, and regional focus for the benefit of local stakeholders. An information session for companies and person interest in being founding members of the Transilvania Chapter was held on May 21 at the Cinema Victorei in Cluj-Napoca at 5pm. Information about the Romania Green Building Council was presented along with ways on how you can get involved in the formation of the Transylvanian chapter.
The fifth edition of the International Conference of Social Responsibility, CSR’10 ‘Pulling in the Right Direction’, took place on the 25th and 26th of May at Hotel Intercontinental, Bucharest.Renowned specialists among whom: Richard Ellis (Alliance Boots), Rob Challis (Man Group), Guenther Juenger (Intel), Yannis Freris (Gefyra) attended CSR’10, to discuss on refreshing topics, offering efficient solutions applied to global needs and challenges.

The RoGBC organized another meet-up dedicated to creating an informal, yet informative dialogue between various green building stakeholders in the construction sector. The theme for the 1st of July Green Café was the “Ideas for transformational change in your project and in the industry”.
This course taught design techniques and the use of materials of technology and materials to minimize water usage in the construction and operation of buildings. The course included information on appliances, fixtures, and solutions that contribute toward points scored on voluntary building certification schemes such as LEED, BREEAM and DGNB.
This event highlighted export and investment prospects for green construction and related industries in high growth regions and discussed both the business opportunities and the chance to make a timely intervention to mitigate unsustainable practices in fast-growing markets. Steven Borncamp and Kevin Hydes provided a summary of multiple high growth markets. These markets share common characteristics, including significant new construction projected, a critical need for renovation and retrofit, and rapidly industrializing economies. In addition, Mr. Borncamp made a recap the presentations from the April 2010 Build Green CEE conference held in Budapest, Hungary.

The RoGBC was pleased to welcome Sandy Mendler, AIA, LEED AP; Principal with Mithun (www.mithun.com) based in their San Francisco office and an expert in architecture and planning of Sustainable Urban Districts. Sandy presented the social, economic and environmental benefits that result from integrated design and planning of sustainable mixed use districts. Case studies were shared of current and ongoing projects to illustrate benefits and describe the processes employed to achieve them
The RoGBC hosted in its office a full day integrated design session with the key partners of the EcoBiblioteca project; a joint effort with biblionet (http://www.biblionet.ro/) combining introduction of computers and internet access with an exemplary green renovation of a library in Cacica, Romania in the Suceava district. We were pleased to have joining us the Mayor and Chief Librarian of Cacica.

This is part of the 20th Economic Forum held in Krynica, Poland; a regional event bringing together investors, private companies, government representatives and NGOs. The event partner was the UNEP Finance Initiative Property Working Group and is moderated by Andy Szyman - Head of Sustainability, F&C REIT Asset Management, United Kingdom.
RoGBC celebrated World Green Building Day and it's 2nd anniversay and held events to promote green buildings in Romania.
The RoGBC supported Let's Do It Romania"; ( http://www.letsdoitromania.ro/en/ ) a nationwide event that mobilizes volunteers to map and then clean up the country. Our Council was specifically involved in addressing the issue of Construction Waste - a significant contributor to illegal dumping and blight of our mountain, rivers, country-side, and cities.
The conference’s second edition, held on September 28th, was a full day workshop to engage the hotel industry and its service and product suppliers in a discussion about the opportunity and importance of a more environmentally responsible approach to designing, renovating, and operating their properties.
Given the high interest and rapid growth of green buildings in Romania, RoGBC launched a new branch in Transilvania. The new office is located in Cluj and covers the neighbouring counties. The organization has the same infrastructure as the current one and is now organizing events and trainings with focus within the region.

The event gathered representatives from public authorities, business sector , academia, NGO’s. RoGBC members had free access to the event based on invitation.
A full day course to advise and prepare the participants on in force and impending European and National legislation and emerging international building rating / certification tools that is dramatically changing how buildings are designed, constructed, operated and deconstructed. Among other legal topics, the course covered European legislation including the upgraded Energy Performance for Buildings Directive and Construction Waste Directive as well as national legislation changes. In addition, participants learned about the internationally recognized building rating tools that are increasingly demanded by investors, developers and building owners in the domestic, regional, and international markets.
A full day course focused on best practices for managing successful green building projects. The course covered, among other topics, key sustainable construction principles including "Integrated Design", obtaining optimal performance results from project partners, and the proper commissioning of completed building projects. Course participants were exposed to very ambitious but achievable performance goals including the "plus-energy" concept where buildings contribute more energy than they consume; a critical concept for the near future due to the approaching EU legislation and concerns about rising energy prices and scarcity.

RoGBC Transilvania has organized a site visit for all RoGBC members to view a building that incorporates geothermal / heat pump technology and an air heat exchanger among other green features. The building work has been conducted with the support of the Regional Development Agency Northwest and included a tour by the designer and contractor.

Cristina Siu provided information on the growing investor demand, availability of green building products, technology, and services, and important trends changing the local market. Her presentation included brief case studies of Romania's green buildings and insight into planned projects.
The RoGBC has been invited to the 1st Regional Advisory Group meeting organized by the Regional Develoment Agency West (www.adrvest.ro) (ADR Vest) to incorporate the activities and viewpoints of government, academia and private businesses to promote Sustainable Construction in the region. Sorin Maxim, Director General and Raluca Cibu-Buzac, Director of Regional and International Policy Direction of ADR Vest described the initiative and the role of the FRESH program regarding the Sustainable Construction domain. biblionet, our partner from the ecoBiblioteca project and RoGBC organized a press conference on the 28th in Cacica, Suceava. The architectural concept/ sketch for the library was presented and further discussions about the project and the next steps took place.

It included developing a green office program as well as achieving internationally recognized green building certification.
Project partners RoGBC, biblionet, Corporate Office Solutions, Dico&Tiganas, Dexion, InterfaceFLOR and WSP met on the 11th of November to finalize the design concepts for the sustainable renovation of the library in Cacica. This event concluded with the issuance of a comprehensive project plan.
Procter & Gamble recently opened its greenest manufacturing facility in the world in Urlati, Romania; a factory with an exemplary level of sustainabilitydesigned from the project inception by renown green architects McDonough Partners. The RoGBC hosted a technical discussion with the project leader, Mr. Jacques Euler from P&G who provided interesting details of the green features of the building, the project experience, lessons learned, and the company's vision with regard to its buildings and sustainability in its products.

At 5:30pm, Representatives of the Romania Green Building Council's delegation to this year's "Greenbuild" conference, international forum, and exposition in Chicago provided a recap of the week-long event discussing trends and developments related to the growth of the sector. At 6pm, the U.S. Embassy hosted a live webchat organized by the U.S. State Department to prepare for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun (COP 16). The topic was "Local Partnerships for City Adaptation and Air Pollution in Megacities". Following the webchat was an opportunity for discussion and networking for the participants.
